Samsung Exynos: Partnering with ARM and AMD to counter Qualcomm
Like Apple and Huawei, Samsung has developed its own Silicon called Exynos for its devices. But the chipset unable to comply with the desired performance in both departments. Either CPU or GPU processing, in both of the departments, it is not even close to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. Thus, the production of the Samsung silicon has put on hold since November last year. The last flagship SoC from the company was Samsung Exynos 990. This can be seen in some variants of the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Note 20.
This flagship Exynos 990 SoC from Samsung is unable to outperform the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865. Not even close to the Snapdragon 865 either on benchmarking or real scenarios. The good news is that the company has identified its weak point. Thus partnering with ARM and AMD to be the no 1 Android Application Processer maker in the industry. Due to the US sanctions Huwaei’s HiSilicon is no longer able to make custom Kirin SoCs. That helps Samsung to be the only Android OEM that makes it’s own SoCs.
Samsung Exynos gets a new treatment with ARM and AMD
Qualcomm has established itself as the best Android Application Processor(AP) maker. With the recent deal with ARM and AMD, Qualcomm is likely to face a tough competition. Samsung Silicon reportedly had worked with ARM’s new Cortex-X series CPU core. The study had found the Cortex-X1 is relatively faster than the Cortex-A77 CPUs. It has a 30% peak performance boost over the Cortex-A77. Furthermore, it has a 22% higher single-core performance in compared to the latest ARM’s Cortex-A78 CPUs. It is not that the only Samsung Silicon will benefit the Cotext-X series Qualcomm also can use the Cortex-X series CPUs if needed since the ARM is open source.
So, Samsung had found the solution for its CPUs what about the GPU department? Well AMD is there for Samsung to boost its GPU performance. The major drawback of the Exynos SoC was the low power Mali GPUs. Samsung was unable to provide constant frame rates while in intensive gameplay. An unnamed Samsung SoC paired with AMD GPU was spotted in a benchmarking platform. Where it outperforms the Qualcomm’s Adreno 650 in a series of testing.
The rumors are surrounding the unnamed SoC is alleged of being the Exynos 1000. However, this is not confirmed but the company is working harder to overcome weakness of the Exynos SoC. Further, the company also reportedly working on the Neural processing engine to bring the AI capabilities to another level alongside the network modem for seamless 5G connectivity.
